JAIPUR — In Jaipur, the daily minimum relative humidity sinks to about 17% by the end of May and climbs to about 70% by mid-August, the India Meteorological Department’s climate booklet for the city shows. Every wooden thing in a flat rides that swing. It is the first thing Vinay Kumar Nevatia considers when a family asks whether the old sheesham almirah from the family house deserves a second life.

Vinay Kumar Nevatia is a Jaipur carpenter who builds modular and solid-wood furniture for new flats, and a fair share of his week goes on pieces that already exist. Families moving into a first flat arrive with sheesham furniture that has outlived two houses: a bed, a diwan, a glass-fronted cabinet. They want to know whether to restore it or replace it.

“Everybody says old sheesham is indestructible,” he says. “It isn’t. It’s patient. Different thing.”

What sheesham can and cannot survive

Sheesham is Dalbergia sissoo, a dense hardwood. The PROTA plant database gives its density as 750 to 800 kg per cubic metre at 12% moisture content and describes the dry wood as very stable in service. The same entry says the heartwood is durable but the sapwood is liable to damage by insects and fungi, and that plantation wood is often of lower quality and less decorative.

That sapwood line decides a lot of his verdicts. The dark heartwood core of an old bed, he says, will often outlast the family that owns it. The pale strip along an edge is where the borers start.

On the plantation point he is careful. “Was the old wood better? I think so. Heavier. Tighter grain. Can I prove it? No. I’ve never had two logs side by side with their papers.”

How Vinay Kumar Nevatia reads a piece

He reads a piece from the inside out: structure first, finish last.

Joints first

He rocks the piece by hand, then studies where rails meet legs and where drawer sides meet fronts. Loose joints are cheap: clean out the old glue and re-seat them. A joint where the tenon has crushed, or the leg has split around it, is a different bill, and he prices it as one.

“A wobble tells me nothing yet. I want to know why it wobbles.”

Wood movement

Wood changes size as it takes up or gives off moisture. The US Forest Products Laboratory’s Wood Handbook says it shrinks and swells most along the growth rings, about half as much across them, and only slightly along the grain. That is why tabletops cup and doors stick in the wet months.

Clients often quote the stability line back at him. “Stable doesn’t mean still,” he answers. A top that cupped years ago and settled is fine. One that is still moving tells him the old fixings are fighting the wood, and he would rather find that out in the workshop than in a client’s bedroom.

Old finishes

In his experience old shellac polish can usually be cleaned and revived, which keeps a colour that only decades of use produce. Thick, flaking paint over wood is harder, because the only way back is stripping, and nobody remembers what went into the paint. The World Health Organization names stripping leaded paint among activities that generate inhalable lead particles, and says young children may absorb up to four to five times as much lead as adults from an ingested dose. He treats any painted piece of unknown age as suspect until a test says otherwise, and he will not sand one inside a flat where a child sleeps.

Where restoration stops working

Furniture restoration has edges, and he marks them early.

Rot ends most conversations. Feet and lower rails that sat on damp floors, or under a leaking window, go soft, and he will not glue a rotten foot back on and call it a repair. Insects are a question of timing. Old flight holes with no dust beneath them are history. Fresh, fine powder under a hole means something is still eating, and if it is eating sapwood the piece may need cutting back to heartwood, or retiring.

Structural cracks are a hard stop. A split through a leg, or across a bed rail where the grain runs out, is not something he will trust with weight. “I’ll patch a table top all day,” he says. “I won’t patch a bed rail somebody sleeps on.”

Veneer is the quiet disappointment. In his experience a good deal of what was sold as sheesham in recent decades is a thin sheesham face over board, and he says so kindly. Solid timber can be sanded back more than once. Veneer gets one light pass, perhaps, before the sander reaches the glue line.

Then there is money. When a repair estimate starts to look like the price of a plainer new piece, he says it out loud. Some clients keep the old one anyway, and sometimes they’re right.

One limit never reaches the workshop. The genus Dalbergia, which includes sheesham, is listed in Appendix II of CITES. The list valid from 5 March 2026 attaches annotation #15 to it, with exemptions that include some finished products up to 10 kg of wood per shipment. CITES regulates international trade, so a cupboard staying in a Jaipur flat is outside its reach. One crated for a relative abroad may not be, and Vinay Kumar Nevatia tells those clients he is a carpenter, not a customs expert, and sends them to a freight forwarder before anything is packed.

Old sheesham in a new Jaipur flat

New flats change what an old piece has to do. Lifts and door frames are tighter than in the family houses the furniture grew up in, and sheesham is heavy, so he measures the route in before he measures the piece, down to the last turn on the landing. A tall, deep almirah often becomes two things: a slimmer wardrobe and a shoe cabinet with a bench on top. A carved headboard can end up as a console behind a sofa.

The air is different too. In his experience new plaster is still giving off moisture when families move in, and air-conditioning dries a bedroom faster than the old house ever did. Repairs, ideally, sit in the workshop through a change of season before the piece goes in. “Most families can’t wait,” he admits. “I lose that one more often than I win.”

The pairing is deliberate. The modular units stay plain, in matt laminate or pale ply, and one piece of sheesham furniture per room carries the warmth. Put three in one room and the flat starts to resemble a museum shop.

The test he applies before quoting

Good furniture restoration is slow, and the slow part is mostly looking. Vinay Kumar Nevatia asks one question before he writes a number on anything. Would the family miss the piece if the scrap dealer took it tomorrow? In his experience the answer arrives within seconds.

“If the answer’s a shrug, I tell them to let it go,” he says. “Politely. If there’s a long silence, we fix the joints.”
